Monday 9th May – walk ***** – Woolverstone to Pin Mill – sunny and warm:).

After yesterdays pretty full on three longboard session with 9.4 my arms were still aching so was relieved that not much wind was forecast today although could be in for a couple of breezy days from tomorrow! So, as it was a lovely warm, sunny day it was exercises in the back garden with Mag pottering in the garden which looks more like a nursery with the many new plants coming, we even got some radishes for tea today:) I then thought we would do something different for a change as we have done the Felixstowe area a lot over the last couple of years starting in the first lock down! So, I packed a picnic and we set off in the van, we rarely use the A 14 but for the second trip in a row we were held up in a que near the Orwell Bridge, luckily it soon cleared. We took the Shotley road and parked just down the lane leading to Woolverstone Marina right opposite the start todays walk:) Starting at 12.45 you head through the impressive park lands that belong to Ipswich High School with some huge trees and soon spot a thrush along with a raven near St. Michaels Church where we do a quick circuit of the graveyard. Then over a few styles right in front of the grand Woolverstone Hall with a huge assortment of wild spring flowers, just stunning:) The path meanders through woods and farmland with ponds before we get our first view of the River Orwell seeing a muntjac with what we think were rabbits but were not sure, we still haven’t seen a hare this year:( We reach Pin Mill at 1.30, I walk to the end of the wooden pontoon right out into the Orwell, just mud today as the tide is out before joining Mag on a bench on the green for lunch with views over the river with its many boats, many nothing more than wrecks really. Well rested and in spite of my dodgy heel, I am having an injection on Friday which fingers crossed can relive my Plantar Fasciitis which I have had for a year now and really hinders my walking! I decide to continue past the Button Oyster pub and many interesting houseboats leading to the Cliff Plantation Woods a National Trust site. Past the famous boat graveyard, very well know by local photographers, in fact there was one there with tripod snapping, I was pleased just to get some pics from a distance before doing the plantation circuit. The path heads up and down, quite steeply in places with the Orwell on the left with some lovely old trees on the right with a good smattering of bluebells just beautiful. We get to the end of the woods and have to walk inland for a bit past more wild garlic and meet the National Trust warden and hear a nightingale before turning back into the Plantation through some very vibrant yellow gorse. I think we are we are now both struggling to walk with my heel very uncomfortable but we have still a few miles left to do so carry on, boyed on by the beautiful surroundings! Through Pin Mill we branch off right through a potato field that leads to a great path running along the Orwell through another wood bringing us out at the Royal Harwich Sailing Club at Woolverstone Marina. Instead of taking the road back to the van we branch off left and come out by St Michaels where it is just a short stroll across the grass to the van. We were very pleased to get back as were absolutely knackered but it was worth all the pain as the walk was amazing. Then all we had to do was drive the 16 miles home for a very welcome cuppa and cake:)
